Systems Australia has announced they are now a Distributor for the Notino R5400
Ruggedised Notebook by Higrade. The
Notino R5400 is encased in a smart, compact, silver-and-grey
‘briefcase-style’ chassis with smoothly rounded edges and a soft handle at
the back for ease of carrying. The ruggedised outer case is constructed from
magnesium alloy for protection from the rigours of the road, to the extent that
the R5400 has been successfully tested to military specifications (MIL-STD-810E)
for both impact and vibration. A leakproof keyboard adds further protection
against the elements and coffee. Notebooks,
with the display closed, were dropped from a height of 2.5 feet onto
2-inch-thick plywood over concrete. Each notebook was dropped onto all faces,
edges and corners until it failed to boot. To pass the test, eight notebooks
were required to survive an average of just over three drops each, over a total
of 26 drops. In the event, the first Hi-Grade survived 22 drops, while the
second easily survived the remaining four drops, leaving six notebooks in hand. The
Notino R5400 is one of the first notebooks to feature the USB 2.0 interface,
providing plug-and-play connectivity to a growing range of high-speed
peripherals as well as existing USB devices. USB 2.0 supports data rates of 480
Mbit/s, a full 40 times faster than USB 1.1 (12 Mbit/s) and even faster than the
IEEE 1394 (‘Firewire’) interface (400 Mbit/s), which is also supported by
the R5400. A Type II PC card socket and an S-Video TV output are also provided,
the latter allowing the R5400 to function as a home DVD player. Despite its
compact dimensions, tapering to 30 mm in thickness, the Notino R5400 comes
complete with a large 14.1-inch screen, either a DVD/CD-RW combo or a DVD-ROM
drive, and a free Mini-PCI slot for optional IEEE802.11b wireless network or
Bluetooth connection. A modem and LAN controller are also included as standard. Four
Internet quick launch buttons (Browser, Email, Search, Favourites) are located
on the front of the chassis, as is a volume control dial. Features
also include Built in 3D stereo sound, 1 PC Card Slot, VGA for external monitor,
Ports: 3x USB 2.0, IEEE 1394, 15-pin video, TV-Out, Mic-in, Audio out,
Fax/Modem, RJ-45 for LAN, FiR, -Adapter. Semi-ruggedised casing for extra
durability, SPILL-PROOF KEYBOARD, AC Adapter, External 1.44MB FDD (Optional).
